Art Bio of Michael W. Barnard

Michael Barnard works in a variety of media.  He has written numerous essays, short stories, and several volumes of poetry as well as several feature film scripts including “The Outermost House” and  “The Transfiguration of Fast Eddie Rose”.  Aside from his formal art training (BFA, MFA), Barnard studied photography with his father, John Barnard.  He took advanced art classes for high school students at the San Francisco Art Institute. After receiving his BFA & MFA degrees (CCAC and Ft. Wright College), Barnard taught for one year at Ft. Wright College in Spokane, WA. He then moved to New York City where he continued painting and showed his experimental films at venues in the New York area and across the USA.

Barnard moved to Los Angeles 1978 where he started Lightning Bolt PIX, a film production company in Santa Monica, and began to work on a wide variety of film and television projects. He continued his development as a writer, musician, and visual artist. He became a resident artist at the 18th Street Arts Center (Santa Monica) in 1989.

Those experiences have led inevitably to his photographic series  – “Photofields” – unique works that consist of traditionally taken and printed photographs mounted in a montage format and presented in a refreshing, evocative way.  His painting has evolved into a series of “Field” objects which are made with layers of glass, gold leaf, scratchboard, paint, string and sometimes photographs.  These artworks are included in collections across the United States.
